- Race fees are usually payable for races; most clubs/organisations use an on-line portal e.g. Entryboss for registration and payment of fees. A transponder may be required for timing purposes at an additional charge.
- Roll-out is a term used to describe the distance the bike travels with one revolution of the pedals. Gearing restrictions for junior riders prevent them from pushing gears too hard for their age group. Specific gearing restrictions are required by AusCycling for age group races: U11s-5.5m, U13s-5.5m, U15s-6.1m & U17s-7.0m. For more information see the AusCycling Technical Handbook (available on-line). Locked out cassettes are accepted for club and generally state races but are not acceptable for national events. Second hand junior cassettes may be available from other club members, so ask around.
- Race officials (Commissaires) are all volunteers; listen carefully to their pre-race instructions.
- Top tip – get to the race venue early, warm up properly and listen to announcements/race instructions.
- Riders are responsible for registering and for race compliance. Often other club members will also be racing, and coaches may attend major events. We recommend speaking to a coach before racing to help you in.
- An AusCycling Race All Discipline licence is required to ride competitively. A Lifestyle licence can be used for non-competitive riding.
- Track racing season is run from October to March and includes State Championships which is held in December of each year. Road races are held between May and October and the Criterium (or Crit) season runs between December and March.
- Information about racing events can be found on the AusCycling website. This information tends to change regularly so check with the coaches or other experienced parents before registering as not all races are appropriate for junior riders. Other sites to check for events are Track Cycling WA, Peel District Cycling Club, Midland Cycling Club, Roues Chaudes, X-Speed’s weekly ride email.
